GenerativeEngineOptimization:HowtoGetYourBusinessCitedbyAISearch

Search is changing under our feet. More and more people don't scroll a page of blue links anymore — they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question and read the answer. If your business isn't in that answer, you're invisible to a fast-growing slice of your market. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is how you fix that.

SEO vs GEO — what actually changed

Classic SEO optimized to rank — to be link number one. GEO optimizes to be cited — to be the source an AI pulls its answer from and names.

The mechanics overlap, but the goal shifts:

  • SEO: "When someone searches, show my page high."
  • GEO: "When someone asks an AI, quote my business as the answer."

You still need solid fundamentals. But you also need your content structured so a machine can lift a clean, correct answer straight out of it.

What AI engines actually reward

AI answer engines favor content that's easy to extract and trust:

  • Answer-first writing — lead a section with a direct 1–2 sentence answer, then explain. AI lifts those opening lines.
  • Clear structure — real headings, short paragraphs, lists, and Q&A. Wall-of-text pages get skipped.
  • Structured data (schema) — FAQ, Service, Organization and Breadcrumb markup that tells machines exactly what a page is.
  • An llms.txt file — a plain-language map of your site for AI crawlers.
  • Being cited elsewhere — mentions across directories, social, and other sites tell models you're a real, trusted entity.

Old SEO asked, "will Google rank this?" GEO asks, "if an AI read this, could it quote a clean, correct answer and name us as the source?" Write for that and you win both.

A practical starting checklist

You don't need to boil the ocean. Start here:

  1. Rewrite key pages answer-first — your top services and best questions.
  2. Add structured data — FAQPage and Service schema at minimum.
  3. Publish an llms.txt in your site root.
  4. Turn real customer questions into content — the exact phrasing people ask is what AI matches against.
  5. Build entity signals — a consistent Google Business Profile, and mentions/links from other reputable sites.

The honest part

GEO is not a magic switch, and neither is SEO. Getting cited — like ranking — is earned over weeks and months through content quality, structure, and trust. What GEO does is make sure that as search moves toward AI answers, your business is eligible to be the answer instead of being skipped.

It's also not either/or: most of what makes you citable by ChatGPT also helps you rank in Google. Do it once, benefit twice.

This is exactly the work we do for clients — structuring sites so both Google and AI engines can understand, trust, and quote them.
